(Dec 10, 2008) - [jaz band] –noun: The band. THE Regis Jazz Band. A collection of talented musicians playing instruments ranging from violins to flutes to clarinets, saxes, trombones, guitars, trumpets, basses, drums, and pianos.
The band as an extracurricular is probably the most time-consuming. Practices take place every Tuesday afternoon, Friday morning, and during one or two lunch periods a week. The band works tirelessly, practicing constantly, not only at school, but also at home, with other band-mates, and whenever they have a free moment during the day. If asked to do anything, a band member would probably say "I can't [Insert Activity Here] right now. I have band practice."
Though time-consuming, as a life experience, the Regis Jazz Band is the most fulfilling. Hours and hours of practice are not wasted and produce a very together band playing music (as apart from a bunch of musicians playing at the same time). This year, led by the very gifted (and tolerant) Mr. Phillips, the band, along with the Regis Repertory, put on "Jump, Jive, and Wail," a big band performance from the 40's and 50's, for lack of a better term, rocked the house. The performers expertly played classics like "It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got that Swing," "Jump, Jive, and Wail," and "Sing, Sing, Sing."
Unfortunately, Mr. Phillips goes on sabbatical this year and there will not be an official spring concert. The Jazz Band also plays at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony yearly, playing famous Christmas carols while the singers sing.
